A wheelchair bearing reduces the friction on the rim of the wheelchair and this also provides connection between the seat and the wheel of the wheelchair. It's also responsible for the wheelchair's maneuverability. |

A wheelchair bearing reduces the friction on the rim of the wheelchair. And this also provides connection between the seat and the wheel of the wheelchair. |
There are three types of wheelchair bearings; the Caster bearing, the Stem bearing and the Rear wheel bearing. Caster Bearings are used in the front of the wheelchair. It supports the smaller wheels of the wheelchair. |
The Stem bearings are located where the front fork attaches to the wheelchair frame. This bearing enables the wheelchair to maneuver. Its primary task is not to support but to maneuver the chair. With this bearing the caster wheel of the wheelchair can move right to left, vice versa, and clockwise or counterclockwise. These bearings cost cheaper than the other two types of bearings. |
The Rear wheel bearing on the other hand supports the rear wheels of the wheelchair. They are bigger in diameter since they are supporting the bigger wheel of the chair. |
A bearing can manipulate the wheelchair's load capacity. So the total weight that can be put on top of a wheelchair depends on the bearing capacity. The total strength of the chair is usually defined by the bearing and the other materials that were used. The usual bearing capacity is 250 pounds. But for special cases there are specially designed bearings that can support a wheelchair that needs to have a load of more than 250 pounds. |
