Taper roller bearings have tapered inner and outer ring raceways between which tapered rollers are arranged. The projection lines of all the tapered surfaces meet at a common point on the bearing axis. Their design makes taper roller bearings particularly suitable for the accommodation of combined (radial and axial) loads.

Taper roller bearings are generally separable, i.e. the cone, consisting of the inner ring with roller and cage assembly, can be mounted separately from the cup (outer ring).Taper roller bearings are produced by in many designs and sizes to match their many uses. These can be grouped as follows

- single row taper roller bearings
- paired single row taper roller bearings
- double row taper roller bearings
- four-row taper roller bearings

Double-row Tapered Roller Bearing
This type of conical bearing can be subject to bidirectional axial load while being subject to radial load. The bidirectional movement of shaft or housing can be limited in the axial windage bound.

Double-row Tapered roller bearings comprise solid cone and cup with tapered raceways and tapered rollers with cages. The bearings are not self-retaining. As a result, the inner ring together with the rollers and cage can be fitted separately from the outer ring. it can support axial loads from one direction as well as high radial loads. They must normally be axially adjusted against a second bearing fitted in a mirror image arrangement.

It is mounted by the circle pedestal rollers. And the roller is ridded by the cone rib. This type of bearing can support the combined (radial and axial) load, expecially the radial direction. It gathers all the tapered surface (cone surface, cup surface, roller raceway surface) top points with one point on the centre line of bearing. The load capability is decided by the cup raceway-angle. we can classify the taper roller bearing as per the rows.(single row, double row, four row) .clearance of tapered roller bearing need be adjusted when it is mounting. the clearance of double row tapered roller bearings and four row tapered roller bearing clearance had been given as per the clients’ requirement before they leave the rolling mill or other factory

double row taper roller bearings can take up heavy loads and are stiff.
Suitable for combined radial and axial loads, they locate axially the shaft in both directions with the stated axial end play or given preload.

The basic styles are two-row converging TDI configuration and two-row diverging TDO configuration.

Rings and rollers are made of high chrome through hardening steels or case hardened carburizing alloy steels depending on the application.
Cages for CIE double row taper roller bearings are stamped pressed steel. A steel pin-type cage, which allows a larger complement of rollers for higher capacity, is also available.

This style of bearing set simplifies design and reduces the danger of bearing clearance changes due to axial shaft expansion.
It is important the definition of the proper internal play related to the application.
taper roller bearings can carry only single direction axial loads. Under pure radial loads, an axial force is induced within the bearings so that they cannot be used singly and a second bearing is required.
A correct operational clearance or preload has to be identified for the correct performance and reliability of the application.
