Tapered roller bearings consist of four basic components including the inner ring, the outer ring, tapered rollers, and cage. Under normal operating conditions, the cage spaces and retains the rollers on the inner ring or the cone and rest of the elements carry the load. The cone, rollers and cage are referred to as the cone assembly. The cup (outer ring) is usually separable from the cone assembly. They come in a variety of configurations like single-row, two-row, four-row and thrust bearing assemblies. Materials used for roller bearings are either alloy or low carbon steels. The carbon and alloys are added to ensure a proper combination of hard fatigue resistant case and a tough ductile core.
